Yes, it’s encouraged! Your containers, bags, jars, etc. can be any shape or size, and they don’t need to be empty — just weigh your containers at one of our three tare stations around the shop before filling new product into them. You only pay for what you put in : ) And remember, if they are Re-Up branded containers and they are fully empty, we already know the tare weights, so no need to weigh them again.
Generally, yes! Please do not try and sample yourself. Just ask a staff member for assistance. You are also welcome to remove the cap of any of our prefilled containers (located on the floating shelves or around the shop) to smell the different scents of products.
It’s easier than you might think : )
• You simply bring in your own containers (or use ours – we have an array of containers and tops (sprayers, pumps, and pour spouts) in different sizes that we sell for anywhere from $1.00 – $5.00)
• Weigh your containers at one of our three tare stations around the shop.
• Fill up on all your low-waste grocery needs! Anything from toothpaste to olive oil and everything in between!
• Head on over to the checkout area. We’ll subtract the original container weight from the new filled weight, so you only pay for what you put into your container.
Many of our products are available for online shopping : )
This includes products that are:
• Endlessly reusable, like the Cast Iron Scrubber
• In compostable packaging, like Bai-Li Deodorant or any of our many Bar Soaps
• Easily refillable without you needing to come into the storefront in Oakland, like our Floss Containers and Floss Refills.
Browse our website and add products to your cart. All products are available for purchase, unless they say "In Store Only".
We do free shipping for orders over $75. All other orders have a flat rate of $8 for shipping. For ecological purposes, we use ground shipping.
Take a look at our shipping policy for the most updated information.
We do our best to make refilling as affordable as possible, while still ensuring we cover costs and pay our team a living wage. Our prices are comparable to, and sometimes lower than, those of other natural (and non-natural) grocery stores around the Bay.
For example, here are some of our prices, compared to those at the Safeway across the street...
• Eco Friendly Hand Soap – $0.40 per oz at Re-Up, $0.48 per oz at Safeway
• Organic Olive Oil – $0.77 per ounce at Re-Up, $0.65 per oz at Safeway
• Organic Peanut Butter – $0.42 at Re-Up, $0.50 per oz at Safeway
You also get 10% off at Re-Up when you buy in bulk! The bulkier the cheaper : ) Plus, a free loyalty punch card where you get a punch for every purchase (no matter the amount). At punch five, you get a free bar soap. At punch 10, you get 20% off your entire purchase.
No problem! We’ve got you covered. We have an array of different containers at the shop for you to use – plus pump tops, pour spouts, and spray tops. We price our containers as affordable as possible ($1.00 – $2.00 for most containers with some specialty ones between $3.00 —$5.00) to reduce the barrier to refilling. We also have brown paper bags if you forget your reusable jars or bags at home.
We often have repurposed boxes available to haul your refills home : ) Just ask a staff member at checkout. We also highly recommend using our reusable refills tote that has convenient internal dividers for keeping your bottles from clinking together… It makes refilling a breeze.
Yes, we have sprayers, pumps, and pour spouts that fit on nearly all our amber glass containers.
A lot! We mean a lot a lot : ) Almost everything you can find in your home! And we’re always adding new products. See our website for a complete listing of what we carry, or print our handy dandy grocery list to help plan your containers and to cross-reference as you run out of stuff at home.
Yes, please! That’s how Re-Up continues to be a useful resource… thanks to product suggestions from our refillers! We love hearing what customers want to see in the shop, so please tell us and we will try our best to get it if enough folks want it too! We have a product suggestion board right inside by the front door and a digital form on our website.
Taring is when you weigh your container before filling it, so we can accurately subtract the weight of the container (and any product that may be in said container) at checkout. This way you only pay for what you get, and nothing more.
We sell everything by weight. The word “ounce” can be confusing, as it can be both a measure of volume (fluid ounce) or weight (ounce). Generally, they are pretty similar to each other: a fluid ounce of olive oil weighs nearly one ounce, for example. But sometimes they’re not similar at all: a fluid ounce of honey weighs 1.4 ounces! As we charge by weight, we require customers to weigh their own containers before filling, even if the repurposed container indicates how many fluid ounces are in the container. Simply put your container on the scale, make sure it is in ounces, record the number on the scale screen, and you are all set to get refilling!
Yes, everything that you can consume in our store is organic, except where it’s not applicable (e.g. honey cannot be labeled organic).
Yes, all of our cleaning products are a better and healthier option for you, your home, and the planet… not just from a packaging perspective but also an ingredients perspective. We always strive to source plant-based, non-toxic, and biodegradable cleaning products that are in alignment with safety standards from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Search all ingredients on EWG’s guide to healthy cleaning.
