Plastics Cause Climate Change... Period.
How It's All Connected... Single-Use Plastics & The Planet.
We started Re-Up because we felt stuck.
We wanted a better way to shop for groceries, minus the unnecessary packaging that consumed resources and created waste. For all of you that have joined us on this refill journey, helping to rethink the way we consume, we thank you.
130 million tons of plastic gets produced each year, mostly from fossil fuels, causing 3.4% of global greenhouse gasses. Nearly half of that plastic gets thrown away after a single use. And, despite the “recycling” triangle printed on plastic, very little can actually be recycled (aka it’s really trash). The great majority of plastic ends up in toxic incinerators, landfills, waterways, beaches, or as microplastics in everything from rain to animal stomachs to human placentas.
It's time to understand the harms of single-use plastics. The Norfolk Southern train derailment last month in Ohio resulted in the release of over 1.1 million pounds of vinyl chloride, a toxic carcinogen, and also the active building block of one of the most common plastics on the planet, PVC. It's hard not to overlook the real cost of the way we collectively consume, and how such toxic ingredients have become a part of our daily lives, our economy, and our earth.
DOES IT EVEN MATTER?
Although choosing reusable and refillable might at times feel small, it reaffirms for ourselves, our families, our community, and our decision makers that there is a better way to consume… avoiding single-use plastics that contribute to climate change.
